Cryptocurrency as a Payment for House Cleaning or Maid Service?

Should you accept cryptocurrency as a payment
for house cleaning services? That’s a great question, and we’re going to
talk about that today. Hi there, I’m Angela Brown, and this is Ask
a House Cleaner. This is a show where you get to ask a house
cleaning question, and I get to help you find an answer. Today’s show is brought to us by MyCleaningConnection.com There are a whole bunch of resources there
for house cleaners, for do-it-yourself cleaners, for professional cleaners, and for people
that are just interested in cleaning in general, so check it out. There are podcasts, there are books, there
are products, there are uniforms, there are cleaning supplies. There’s a bunch of new stuff that we keep
adding all the time based on information that you guys request, so MyCleaningConnection.com Onto today’s question which is from a house
cleaner that was asked by a customer, “Can I pay you in cryptocurrency for your house
cleaning services?” The house cleaner came to me and she said, “What on earth is cryptocurrency? And am I supposed to accept it like I accept credit cards?” Until just a minute ago, house cleaners were
only accepting cash. And so, we just talked all of our house cleaners
into accepting credit cards, and now they’re coming back with the cryptocurrency thing. I do not personally know a whole lot about
cryptocurrency. I personally do not accept cryptocurrency,
but I think we’re about to change that. I just got word from our HouseCleaning360
that they’ve decided that they’re going to start accepting cryptocurrency for payment
for listings for the website. I guess it’s becoming more mainstream. It’s not, however, mainstream yet. Here’s what we know about cryptocurrency. There’s a lot of hype around it. There are a lot of people that are investing
in cryptocurrency, and cryptocurrency only has a perceived value to it. It’s not backed buy gold, but again, neither
is the US dollar. You could say it’s not worth so much, but
neither is the US dollar. That’s still how we pay our bills. How do you accept cryptocurrency? Well, right now you would have to go through
an online system because there’s no actual stuff to give you. There are some bitcoins and there are things
that are out there, but for the most part it’s all online trading. There is a company called Bitwala which is
a technological financial institution. They’re creating a debit card that will transfer
your bitcoin or your currency into a regular currency, so you can spend it at other places. I know that’s coming down the pipe right now,
if it’s not already available. I know they were working on it earlier this
year. But right now, you can buy things on Amazon
with your cryptocurrency. There are a couple of other places online
that have mainstream things, but it’s not very mainstream yet, and it’s certainly not
mainstream in the house cleaning industry. There’s a group of us that are professional
house cleaners on Facebook, and there are about 8,000 of us in the group. I was just kind of like, “How many people
are actually accepting crypto for their house cleaning business?” I asked a question, and it was like crickets. This active group that’s very vocal just went silent. I mean, nothing. There are a couple of people. They were like, “Huh! What!” I’m following, but nobody. I was like, “I’ve got this Airbnb cleaning
group that we have going on. Let me ask them in there.” I jumped over into that group and I asked
them, “Are any of you accepting cryptocurrency in exchange for house cleaning?” Or, here’s the catch, “Do you accept cryptocurrency
for your Airbnb’s because this is for hosts as well?” Crickets. Nothing. Nada. Nobody. It’s not mainstreams enough yet that I would
recommend you jump in on the bandwagon unless you want to just stockpile the cryptocurrency
and make it as an investment and see where it goes. When crypto first came out, it was very inexpensive, and it skyrocketed with all the hype that’s out there. And so, it’s possible that this is a huge
investment and it would be a good deal for you at some point. What we do know is this. The United States government does not recognize
cryptocurrency as a currency. They recognize it as an asset. And so, if you earn cryptocurrency, they want
their tax money, so you still have to pay taxes on money you earned even if it’s not
the US dollar. You still have to pay taxes, so you still
have to keep track somehow. All right, so that is kind of where we are
right now with cryptocurrency. If you decide you’re going to accept it for
your house cleaning business, I want to be the first to know about it. I want you to drop me notes in the show notes. I want you to write into the show. I want you to call in. I want to know how it works. I want to know how you’re using it and how
you accept it. Right now, we can accept PayPal, and we can
accept credit cards via Square or whatever the different programs are, and we can accept
cash from a cash app. But how do you accept crypto? How do you get that from the customer to you? I guess you would both have to have crypto
accounts online and have them transfer the money. I don’t know all the nuances of that yet,
but I am curious. I’m going to keep my ear to the road and hear
what goes on, and I’ll keep you posted. But if you hear something before I do, please
let me know as well. Because if this turns into something big like
I think it is, then I think at some point you may want start accepting it as a form
of payment. It’s an option. All righty, that’s my two cents for today,
and until we meet again, leave the world a cleaner place than when
you found it.

  2. I will accept it absolutely, although have only had one person actually pay that way. I suspect more will use it with time, like 5 years from now possibly. It doesn't have to be Bitcoin either, I will take pretty much anything, although I would charge slightly more due to the volatility of the crypto market. I've invested in crypto for years, and it's been great, but other than a few trades this year has been pretty slow.
